چکیده

The medial axis is an important shape descriptor first introduced by Blum [2] via a grassfire burning analogy. However, the medial axes are sensitive to boundary perturbations, which calls for global shape measures to identify meaningful parts of a medial axis. On the other hand, a more compact shape representation than the medial axis, such as a “center point”, is needed in various applications ranging from shape alignment to geography. In this paper, we present a uniform approach to define a global shape measure (called extended distance function, or EDF) along the 2D medial axis as well as the center of a 2D shape (called extended medial axis, or EMA). We reveal a number of properties of the EDF and EMA that resemble those of the boundary distance function and the medial axis, and show that EDF and EMA can be generated using a fire propagation process similar to Blum’s grassfire analogy, which we call the extended grassfire transform. The EDF and EMA are demonstrated on many 2D examples, and are related to and compared with existing formulations. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of EDF and EMA in pruning medial axes, aligning shapes, and shape description.

A Dense Medial Descriptor for Image Analysis

We present dense medial descriptors, a new technique which generalizes the well-known medial axes to encode and manipulate whole 2D grayvalue images, rather than binary shapes. To compute our descriptors, we first reduce an image to a set of threshold-sets in luminance space. Next, we compute a simplified representation of each threshold-set using a noise-resistant medial axis transform. Finall...

Computing a compact spline representation of the medial axis transform of a 2D shape

We present a full pipeline for computing the medial axis transform of an arbitrary 2D shape. The instability of the medial axis transform is overcome by a pruning algorithm guided by a user-defined Hausdorff distance threshold. The stable medial axis transform is then approximated by spline curves in 3D to produce a smooth and compact representation. These spline curves are computed by minimizi...

Title: Mixed-Signal VLSI for Skeletonization by Grassfire Transformation - Design and Evaluation Authors:

This paper presents a novel mixed-signal VLSI focal-plane array processor performing the morphological operation of skeletonization of binary images in real time. The chip exploits the inherent parallelism of the grassfire algorithm by using a massively parallel mixed-mode array achieving high computational speed and relatively low power consumption. The system is a two-dimensional array of ide...

Computing medial axes of generic 3D regions bounded by B-spline surfaces

A new approach is presented for computing the interior medial axes of generic regions in R bounded by C-smooth parametric B-spline surfaces. The generic structure of the 3D medial axis is a set of smooth surfaces along with a singular set consisting of edge curves, branch curves, fin points and six junction points. In this work, the medial axis singular set is first computed directly from the B...
